How Other Innovative Expansion Units Are Priced

Two expansion systems that stood out during our research were the rooftop units used on the Redtail Overland Skyloft and the Hymer Venture S.

Neither company offers its expansion system separately. They are only available as part of a complete vehicle, and both come at a significant price:

• Redtail Overland Skyloft: approximately US$595,000

• Hymer Venture S: approximately US$274,000
  

We didn’t want to take this approach. Very few customers can afford vehicles at these price points, and we believe there is far more potential in making the expansion system available to van designers and builders.

By offering the Roomygami Extend as a standalone product, designers have the freedom to use the additional space in many different and innovative ways.

Comparison to Standard Pop-Top and Loft Van Options

Pop-top and loft-style expansion units can range from approximately US$6,000–$20,000+ for the unit alone.

Professional pop-top installations can typically range from US$18,000–$25,000 when incorporated into a complete van conversion, including electrical integration and interior finishing.

We believe the Roomygami Extend offers several advantages over rooftop systems:

• The additional space can be fully integrated into the main living area, making the entire van feel larger.

• There is no need to dedicate valuable internal space to a ladder or stairs.

• It is significantly more stable in windy conditions.

• There is no need to cut into or structurally modify the van, making installation much simpler.

• The system is lightweight, with its load supported through the towbar mounting structure.

• Getting into bed is much safer and easier than climbing stairs or a ladder.

• It provides space for a full-sized double bed with a proper, comfortable mattress.

Comparison to Slide-Outs

Slide-outs are one of the most common ways of creating additional space in larger RVs and motorhomes, with hundreds of thousands produced each year.

However, they are much less common in vans.

A typical slide-out installed in a van can cost approximately US$10,000–$20,000.

The average slide-out adds approximately 0.7 square metres of floor area.

The Roomygami Extend provides approximately 3.6 square metres of additional space.

On a simple cost-per-square-metre comparison, achieving the same amount of additional space using conventional slide-outs could represent approximately US$50,000–$100,000 worth of expansion.

More importantly, it is extremely difficult to add 3.6 square metres of usable space to a van using conventional slide-outs.

Additional Advantages Over a Slide-Out

• When folded away, the Roomygami Extend occupies only around one-sixth of its fully extended volume, opening up many more possibilities for interior van design.

• There are fewer issues associated with moving weather seals.

• It can be manually folded away if electrical power is unavailable.

• It is significantly lighter for the amount of additional space created, at approximately one-third to one-quarter of the weight per square metre added compared with conventional systems.

Comparison to Buying a Longer Vehicle

A typical Sprinter camper van that is approximately one metre longer can cost around $20,000–$25,000 more, for example when comparing a six-metre vehicle with a seven-metre vehicle.

Many customers already recognise the value of additional living space and are prepared to pay more for a longer van.

The Roomygami Extend adds approximately two metres of usable length when extended.

Using the cost difference between vehicle lengths as a comparison, this could represent approximately $40,000–$50,000 of additional usable-space value.

But unlike simply buying a longer van, the Roomygami Extend allows you to retain the advantages of a compact vehicle:

• Easier to drive

• Far more options for parking

• Easier manoeuvring

• Significantly lighter than moving to a larger vehicle

• Lower fuel consumption than larger, heavier vehicles

Auto-Levelling Bed and Van Stabilisation

The system makes it easier to achieve a level and adjustable sleeping position, helping create a more comfortable night’s sleep while also stabilising the van. Comparable levelling and stabilisation systems can cost approximately $1,500–$8,000 and can add significant weight to a vehicle.

Drop Rack / Roof Rack

A comparable drop-rack or roof-rack system can cost approximately $3,000, and many are not automatically electrically operated.

Years of Development and Testing

The Roomygami Extend is a sophisticated, high-quality engineered product that has taken years of development, testing and refinement.

Multiple iterations have been required to create a system that is robust, practical, lightweight and reliable in real-world conditions.
