How other new innovative expansion units are priced

Two of the expansion units we quite liked as part of our research were the roof top units on the Redtail Overland Skyloft van and the Hymer Venture S

They do not offer their expansion units separately — only as part of complete vans but they are really quite expensive.

• Redtail $595,000 US dollars

• Hymer Venture S - $274,000 US dollars

We didn’t want to go for this strategy as very few customers can afford that price. We also wanted to offer the units to van designers rather than offer a full van as there are lots of innovative ways to use the extra space.

Comparison to standard loft/pop top van option

The price of these units can range from $6000-$20,000 plus just for the unit. Professional pop-top installations generally range from $18,000–$25,000 when bundled into a full van conversion including electrical integration and interior finishing.

We think the Roomygami Extend is more useful than roof options because

• The space can be more integrated with the rest of the van making all the spaces feel larger

• There is no need for space of a ladder or stairs

• Much more stable in wind - can be very hard to sleep when rolling around on top of a van

• Don’t need to cut into the van at all - much simpler installation that does not require certification. Light weight addition with load bearing on towbar mount.

• Much safer to roll into bed rather than navigate tricky stairs/ladder.

• Fully sized double bed of decent thickness to get super comfortable sleep.

Comparison to slideouts

Slide-outs are the most common way to get extra room in your mobile camping product and they make hundreds of thousands of these per year. However they are much less common in vans than RVs and the prices below are for vans

• A typical price of a slide out installed in a van is $10,000-20,000 US dollars

• The average area of a slide out is approximately 0.7 square m

The Roomygami Extend is about 3.6 square m of additional space so equivalent cost for space would be $50,000–$100,000.  Realistically you just can't get that amount of extra space with slide outs.

Extra advantages of Roomygami over a slide out are

• It takes up only 1/6th of the space folded up as when it extends - this give many more design options for using space in van

• No issue with moving weather seals

• Can be easily manually folded away if for some reason there is no power

• Much lighter for the additional space ⅓ to ¼ the weight per square m added

Average price of different length vehicles

A typical Sprinter camper van that is 1 meter longer costs 20-25K more (6m versus 7m sprinters) and lots of people see the value of having more space and pay that extra price.

The Roomygami Extend adds two meters of useable space to your van so could be argued adds $40-50,000 of value to your van.

It is much better than just a longer van because:

• It is so much easier to drive

• Vastly more options for parking and manoeuvring

• It is much lighter

• Uses much less fuel than larger heavier vehicles

Other benefits you get from Roomygami Extend

• Auto leveling bed / van stabilisation system. This makes it easy to get a level (and adjustable) bed position for a more comfortable nights sleep. These can cost from $1500-8000 but can also be quite heavy

• Drop rack / roof rack - approximately $3000 though not automatic electrically driven.

Expensive to develop and test over years

The Roomygami Extend is a sophisticated high quality engineering product that has taken many years of iterations to make robust and functional (link to engineering).
